Born and raised in Charlotte NC, Lucas studied euphonium and tuba in undergraduate school, but also dedicated a great deal of his energy to both bass and tenor trombone in jazz and classical genres. His experience on tenor and bass trombone in a myriad of outlets aided in fostering a professional playing career as an independent contractor.
After undergraduate school, Lucas divided his time amongst several orchestras both semi pro and professional, toured the east coast as a salsa trombonist, and arranged music for high school bands, chamber ensembles, and the Buzz City Brass mini corp., housed by the National Basketball Association and the Charlotte Hornets, and sponsored by Jupiter Brass and Ludwig Percussion.
Lucas and his Wife Meri also founded Intrepid Brass in 2016 in Charlotte NC (intrepidbrass.org) and continues as a chamber brass and launching in 2022, full American Brass Band in Wichita KS.
Lucas appeared as a soloist on several occasions with the UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble on euphonium and tuba, Euphonium soloist with the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, and again as a soloist with the UNC Charlotte Big Band. During his tenure at UNC Charlotte, he had the opportunity to perform with widely successful jazz artists such as Dick Oatts, Brad Leali, Scott Wendholt, Mike Steinel, Jeff Coffin, Harold Danko, Terell Stafford, Jim Riggs, and Paul McKee.
